Muriel's Wedding

Hi, this is a bit of an odd one. I was watching Muriel's Wedding for the umpteenth time today, and there's one bit that always gets me. Right near the start, Muriel is at her friend's wedding and bumps into a man who is a friend of her dad's, who gives her his card. He has a strange large mark on his nose. She says something like What's wrong with your nose? , he says what?, then Muriel looks like she's put her foot in it and quickly says Nothing, and the man mumbles something about it being sunburn. I always get the impression that it could be something else untoward which shouldn't be mentioned. Any ideas, or am I just reading too much into this?

Might be syphilis some gay men can get it on their noses. Maybe he's hiding that he's gay.
