I have a cat who appears to be left pawed, if she's playing or after something it's always her leftie that is used.

How would you know? This is a serious question. What would bring a naturalist to the opinion that a species is generally left handed? For example, are squirrels left- or right-handed and how would you know? How about horses? Would an equestrian know if a horse was left or right footed and what would that mean?

I think kopend started an interesting thread.

i think you would know by watching them eat etc. i.e, i think monkeys would eat a banana with thier right hand or a lion would catch a zebra with its right paw striking out first
A study recently claimed Horses are left or right hoofed explaining why some perform better on left or right handed race courses.

This is strange because every time Katy (our dog) has a hair cut, she scratches like mad. It's always her left side that gets the most stick. I was thinking that she must be left pawed only yesterday.
