Crackling Coming From Behind Light Socket

Our rarely used downstairs hall light socket has developed a slight crackling sound coming from behind it.
The light it controls can be turned on or off by 2 separate sockets at either end of the hall and it doesn't matter which one is used but when the light is turned on the crackling stops. As soon as it is turned off the noise starts again.

I've not noticed it before and although it is faint it is noticeable when walking nearby.

Any ideas?

I think you mean switches rather than sockets. Anyway, it sounds like a loose connection. Have a sparky look at it ASAP. You could try flipping the switch on your consumer (fuse box) unit and see whether the crackling stops.

In typical fashion it has stopped as quickly as it started but I will definitely take a look tomorrow.

It's 2-way switching, Matt. Three wires rather than the usual two. When the circuit is switched over to the one that isn't "live" so to speak, the other switch wire is still connected..... or rather "loosley" connected. I guess that's what's buzzing.
Have a look yourself, it should be apparent.
