there are two long -time direlict properties in my area - surprising given the housing shortage in my area - how do i find out who owns them?

If the properties aren't registered with the Land Registry, it will be very difficult to trace ownership. If the properties are registered, however, it's really easy. The information is available online, here:
http://www.landregisteronline.gov.uk/
(You have to pay a fee but, at just �2 for each property, it's much cheaper than most of the government's online services).

If they are not registered with the land registery. you can look up the rules on claiming them from the Land Registery, or in a legal type book. again a small fee = cheap property if you are succesful good luck.

It would be easy to find out if the council owned the properties. They are bound by Freedom of Information legislation therfore all you would need to do is make a formal request to them asking if they own the properties.

The local authority has the power to make a compulsory purchase order. They should have a department that deals with empty homes, they make their own enquiries and, they can ultimately take on the house. Takes ages though. Report these houses to your local council and keep badgering them.
