'All the food in supermarkets have a markup price to help pay for wages yet they want YOU to scan and pack'

they also use good business practise and factor in the cost of the rent/rates/lighting and heating and other trading essentials, it's called 'running a business' lol

The introduction of self service check outs is actually to keep staffing costs down (the biggest controlable cost to any retailer) and people lost their jobs, took reduced hours, if they go wrong blame online trading for creating competition.
Mojo-Jo-Jo, for lightweight items such as you describe, don't just lightly place the item down, but sharply knock the shelf (ie scales) on which they're placed. This will let the till's computer know that an item has definitely been scanned through.

Another thing I do is to scan everything through without pausing, then pack my bags when its all paid for. That tip was given to me by an assistant at my local supermarket. I find that less assistance is required using this method.
I only use them if I just have a few things in my basket. Morrison's self-serve tills are useless but Sainsburys, Tesco and Asda, I find very user friendly.
Can't afford to buy groceries on line. Minimum spend and/or delivery costs not cost effective for single person with limited storage space.
Walking to the shops and lugging home shopping is good exercise. Sometimes saying hello to a checkout person is the sole interaction of the day.
Machines of the devil

and no you cant complain about them,
there is never a site not a check-box

They have to save money as just about every has them
What I hate most about them is buying a DVD or CD or Alcohol you have to wait for an assistant. So I use the ordinary checkout.

I remember when supermarkets were comparatively new. My Dad refused to go in one. He said there would be a lot of thieving and they wouldn't work. Wrong again.
Hate them, they always go wrong for me,and also they are doing someone out of a job.
Would gladly patronise small independent businesses if they were available.
Fabulous greengrocer, good bakery, no butcher, fishmomger, cobbler, deli.
Local co-op seems to be deteriorating by the week. Many lines no longer stocked. If I have to get a bus for a fifteen minute journey into town to get what I need I may as well do my complete shop there and avoid the co-op. Will still walk to the geengrocer and bakery.
i once walked out of morrisons and left shopping on one of those damn tills as no one was available to sort the problem out. there was one main till manned and ciggy counter . woman behind counter said that they were understaffed that day and i would have to wait till her queue went down!!!!! i was livid and trounced out , better things to do with my time. ive never set foot in that particular morrisons since!!
They are the devil - never quicker, then if you have over 18 items (age wise I mean) or something with a damn security tag, you end up standing there like a spare whatsit, waiting for a miserable assistant who grunts at you, presses a few buttons and wanders off again. Painful, painful!!
I like them. The ones in the co-op are the best. If you have an age restricted item they let you carry on scanning while you wait for an assistant.
They're supposed to be idiot/imbecile proof........
