18a. Interrupted ringing sound with awful noise (6,2) C?I?E?-I?

I'm thinking "CHIMED IN", but that doesn't really make sense, never heard of that as a saying before!

I wonder if its a local thing? We use "chimed in" meaning to "butt in"
in someone else's conversation.
the clue is in the word ringing because the bells chime or ring. We use it round here.
