Where does the expression 'Be careful what you wish for' originate from?

If you wish for the extreme of something. At the time you do not believe could possibly happen & then it does. example; ' I wish Vannessa Feltz was more masculine.' Then she puts on loads of muscle, develops a deep voice & starts beating people up.
'be careful of what you wish, for it may come true' This is not an expression but an ancient saw; a life observatian of Fortean proportions in it's accuracy.. much like 'the rule of three' is qg [which google]
The great German poet, Goethe (1749 - 1832), wrote: "Beware of what you wish for in youth, because you will get it in middle life."
So does that mean that Twiggy and Brigitte Bardot are finally coming to get me? Blimey. I hope Goethe was wrong.
Manners, Fred! Two delightful ladies, even now, I'm sure. Few of us still have that glorious bloom of youth. It's one of life's greatest sadnesses that - when a man is 19 or 20 - all he really wants is to be making love to women of 19 or 20, whereas - when he is 59 or 60 - all he really wants is to be making love to women of 19 or 20!
