Listener 4247 Yod Jsyv Dox By Ottorino
28 Answers
A very enjoyable puzzle and thankfully not as daunting as it looks (much as Wagner, according to Mark Twain, is better than he sounds). I made either an inspired or lucky guess as to the nature of the codes and had then cracked long before the 10 misprints were revealed. To get this all to work out as it does was a masterful job of setting, so thanks Ottorino.

BTW, Anapice, my grid was filled on Saturday, but learning recently that I have only six months of Listener-solving left has reduced my enthusiasm for it and here somewhat. Besides, other than myself and JEG, is anyone really bothered whether I've solved it? No.
Still, welcome to page two.

I must be in a tiny minority since I actually take (and sometimes even read) The Times every day; so on Saturday I just cut out the puzzle and photocopy it. The machinations of the Times Crossword Club people therefore don't matter a jot to me. As for Ottorino's puzzle I unreservedly welcomed a puzzle which had a grid with bars and numbers and nothing to highlight or otherwise muck about with at the end. That said it was something of a chore to get all the codings sorted out. But mustn't grumble!
Another excellent Listener, even if the coding and decoding did get a bit laborious by the end. Am missing one of the eighteen coded clues so must have been a bit liberal with my parsing or wordplay somewhere, but pretty sure final grid is correct. Like most on here, I cracked the codes long before the misprints made any sense (although if you didn't know about this type of cipher previously, not sure how much help the hint would have been?
