Sat Nav Apps For Android
13 Answers
Hello peeps.
Finally ditched the old Sony Ericsson K600i mobile and got a Samsung Galaxy.
Do any of you good ABers have recommendations for some useful apps?
In particular I want a Sat Nav app so I don't get lost when we go to Brittany in a couple of weeks.
Also a good YouTube converter would come in handy (app or web page).
Many thanks

First thing - install 3G Watchdog and set it up to monitor your 3G data usage - some android satnav apps can be very data heavy. Google Maps is good - but only downloads the maps as you use them, which can be a pain as it burns through your data quota (and makes it useless if you are out of 3G data coverage). NavFree World is better in that it downloads the whole country maps to your phone when you install it (so use a wifi connection to install it) - but the mapping isn't as good as google.

Other things I like :
TuneIn Radio - loads of radio stations
Apndroid (makes it very easy to turn on/off 3G data - useful when abroad in particular and to save battery life)
Amazon Kindle (even if you don't have a kindle you can download free books)
Aldi app - find nearest store, see special offers (yes, I know I'm sad)
Avast security - checks all apps for viruses etc - and allows you to remotely lock your phone if it is stolen/lost

On the subject of Security ware I did use Avast but then was recommended to use "Lookout" and its not as heavy as Avast and has loads of trick features plus it's free. Another one of you travel a lot which I do is "Skyscanner" it's brilliant for flights in and out of UK. Viber is also good if you have other people with smart phones and want to talk to them outside of your network. I also use the BBC news app a lot when I'm travelling. If you have BT broadband at home, their BT Wi-Fi app is good for finding open hotspots on the move giving you free Wi-Fi in hundreds of locations also download the playstore app to search for and download your apps, these are then saved onto your PC through google chrome. I've had two Galaxies now and the only draw back with them is battery so buy a Genuine Samsung 12v charger for your vehicle. Good luck
One last thing for your Samsung, download the Samsung Kies software onto your laptop, this takes care of everything to do with your phone, pictures-music-software updates etc etc. I use it all the time for taking my photo's off and putting music on. As for your original question I would stick with google maps, if you have vodafone, activate the vodafone passport for when you go abroad, it's £3 a day and you just use your phone as normal with everything coming off your inclusive bundle, you will need to activate the data roaming on your handset as this defaults to "off" when you go abroad.
