At a rough guess sounds like a driver issue.
Assuming Windows Control Panel > System > sound then re-install drivers
or maybe you have a OEM repair disk/partition that you can reinstall from.

thanks - it says they are up to date - but should I uninstall, then reinstall?

i was about to but then it warned me - i dont want to be unable to reinstall it
yes, uninstall , re-boot and then install
forgot to say, they may be uptodate but they may have got corrupted.
are they generic drivers or what ? see if you can get the latest version from the manufaturers site.
The sound circuits in most laptops are complete rubbish.

Buy an external USB sound card. If it is headphones you want just buy a decent USB headset.
