In Lancashire now there is a central places for certificates in Preston, so if you were born in Lancaster (for example) you wouldn't be able to collect a copy of your birth certificate in Lancaster you would need to go to Preston. They usually cost 7.
you just need to fil a form in when u get there, put on it your date and place of birth and the name of your mum and/or father, and the name you were given at registration, which if before 1972 was a christian name only but after 1972 was a cristian name(s) and a surname, you fathers if your parents were married or your fathers if he attended to register or your mother's if the father did not attend and they were not married and he didn't subsequently have his name added before u were 12 months old.
Hi DKX, looks as though a trip to Burnley would be a waste of time, you do need to get yourself to Preston, check out http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/environment/birthsmarriagesdeaths/certificates/index.asp
