Camera Sold On Ebay

I recently sold a camera on ebay for about £220. The buyer paid for the item firstly via e cheque as he said his paypal funds were low. He sent a message to apologise and said if I wasn't happy with this method of payment I could cancel the transaction he will pay via paypal. In the same message he asked if it would be possible to send to a different address to the one registered with his paypal account. This was on Tuesday 16th. I said I will cancel and true to his word he sent payment today. It has gone through paypal and is in my account now. Today, after he sent payment he also sent a message to ask if I could possibly send it today special delivery with sat guarantee so it gets there tomorrow.

I managed to do this for him. It cost a little extra but he said he will send the extra via paypal to make up for it.

I asked him if he wanted me to send it to the corrected address he sent to me via ebay and he said to use a different one!!! That's a different one to the one linked to his paypal, and a different one to the first corrected one. So 3 separate addresses.

I was rushed when I sent this item so didn't really think much of it at the time. It was only afterwards when I read the paypal payment email and it said something along the lines of 'THIS ITEM IS ELIGIBLE FOR SELLER PROTECTION, YOU WILL NOT BE COVERED IF.......and one of the reasons was IF YOU SEND ITEM TO A DIFFERENT ADDRESS THAN THE ONE LINKED TO PAYPAL.

I have done this but surely if Ive done everything through ebay, paypal and even sent special delivery with tracking number I should be covered should anything go wrong???

Does this sound dodgy?

Can the paypal money from him (now in my account) get reversed in anyway?

You are not covered by eBay or PayPal protection if you send the item to a different address to the one registered with PayPal, as you've pointed out.

It sounds very dodgy to me.

The payment can get reversed, even if you empty your PayPal account you would still be liable.

yes he can reverse it between now and receipt or after receipt but he has to return the irem to you and he should only get a refund when you confirm you have recieved the item back , if he calims he item was damaged you get it back and make a claim off the delivery service. He can't keep the item and get the money back, what sort of rating did he have?

dot, more than likely he will claim his eBay and PayPal accounts were hacked and he never received the item as it wasn't sent to his address; he didn't buy it.

Unless the seller can prove the buyer did receive the item because he signed for it when it was delivered, PayPal would have no choice but to return the money. Proof of postage is not enough.

If it were sent special delivery as requested, then it IS signed-for on delivery....

bob should ring ebay and paypal asap then and log a concern, get them to ring the buyer.

Dispite others here assuring me that their experience with Paypal has been wonderful, eBay/Paypal has only offered me grief. I do not believe they would stretch a point if you have not done what they stated needed to be done in order to be covered. In my personal experience it's bad enough when you do try to follow all the rules, they'll find some way to wriggle out and support the con artist.

In your case I think you'll just have to hope the buyer was actually genuine. If not then you've learnt a valuable lesson.

Meanwhile does the PO (or other courier) cover special delivery problems ?

If the worst happens, report it to the police as it is definitely a criminal offence.

The post office only helps if the item is lost or damaged.

In my experience the police will thank you for reporting it at the time, and that will be the last you'll hear. You can try chasing them up about it on the number given you, but the phone rings and no one answers. Presumably too busy with large criminal activity to care much about a few hundred quid issue.

Thankfully it turned it it was legitimate. He has received the item and has already left positive feedback for me. Your responses did worry me though. I like to think I'm quite savvy with this sort of thing but I will definitely think twice if someone asks me to deliver to different address in future.

I would say it is highly suspicious indeed. I do not trust PayPal anyway as they can take the money back if the person complains about the goods. Of course foreign cheques , even if cleared, can be reversed in your bank so be very careful with foreign buyers. Best to receive currency in notes then youcan take it to a travel agent and receive real cash that nobody cantake off you. I like folding money that you can feel,siff and put in yor wallet. Electronic money is too ephemerel.

Thankfully it was OK but the buyer could have said he had not got it and claimed off paypal/ebay , as you did not send it to the registered address paypal would have taken the cash out of your account and refunded it even if you had proof of delivery. ( as the delivery would not have been to the registered address)
