Strange Epitaph

I went to a funeral a few weeks ago. After the service we walked past a 'wall of rememberence' type thing that had lots of plaques with peoples names on there who were obviously cremated there.

Most of these plaques had a small epitaph such as 'he will be greatly missed' or 'loved by all' etc etc.

One of the plaques caught my eye for a lady who lived into her late 70s. It had the simple epitaph 'she tried'. Sounded like a school report or something. A fitting tirbute?

Maybe the lady picked the phrase herself?

It used to be quite common, a century or so ago, for a woman's tombstone to say " she did what she could". Terrible lack of imagination on the part of the bereaved, I always think.
Mind you, it's better than " she loved much ", which is not meant to be complimentary.

Or perhaps there just wasn't room to add ..."my patience"?

Not a believer in the after life then, otherwise it would have said 'Will Try Harder Next Time'.

Perhaps that's how she felt and that's what she wanted. Just before she died, my mum said 'I tried'. She meant she'd tried her best in life.

There is supposed to an epitaph for a spinster postmistress which read "Returned unopened!"

I was told of a gravestone which had the epitaph - Beneath this sod lies another!!
