how deep do the foundations need to be?

Hi,

Could you tell me what type (and depth) of foundations would be the most suitable for an outbuilding I am building in my garden? The dimensions are 4m X 3m X 2.5m. It will be single storey.

What type of building is this going to be,if a wooden shed level the soil and put down paving slabs, if a brick built workshop you may need planning permission.

Another thing to consider is, will this be a permanent building ? If so, you may want to consider a concrete floor (even if it is a wood structure). You may even need to add footers. Things to consider are, what is this structure used for ? and what am i building this structure out of ?Then you can decide how thick to make your concrete floor and depending on the circumstances weather or not to use footers. Soleras' idea of paving slabs may lead to trouble down the road later if they decide to shift. They may sink or lift and before you know it, the building will no longer have a sturdy floor to sit on. You may even consider putting your structure on top of a row or two of concrete blocks to keep it up off the wet ground and keep it from rotting out in a couple years.

You really need advice from a local building inspector from your local council because a lot depends on your ground type, proximityof trees etc.There can also be some nasty chemical conditions in the soil itself. You need to contact building control at you local council and if within 5 mtrs of the house and other conditions you may need planning consent.
