Modeo 1.8 LX Wheel sceeching

My husband drives a Mondeo 1.8 LX 51 reg

It has an intermitent problem with screeching from one of the rear wheels. The hub cap gets hot to the touch when the screeching happens - people stop to look at us as we pass!!- because of the noise.. The garage says there is nothing wrong with it.. can anyone make any useful suggestions as to how we can find the source of the problem and what we can do about it?

sounds like maybe ur rear brake pads are either worn or ur caliper( the part over the pads may be seized) causin the wheel to bind on causin the heat build up go to another garage for second opinion. common problem wit mondoes

I once had this problem on a Scorpio I had, I cured it in seconds, once it started screeching I stopped, just reversed a short distance and this cleared the small stone which had lodged between the Brake disc and the backplate! The garage would not be able to see the stone.

sounds like something is seizing or locking up somewhere - i had on old corsa which i dropped off at a garage for a service, they overtightened the handbrake cable ever so slightly and it would intermittently not release on one side of the axle causing the brake drum and pad to get bloody hot and smoke!

there is obviously something wrong with your car if it causes people to stare at the screeching and gets hot. take it to a different garage.

Agree with thebhoy about a possible siezed caliper. I had it happen on a front wheel withan old Sierra.....couldn't touch the alloy wheel for the heat.
Easily fixed at any garage that knows anything about brakes.
Don't you just love it when some expert tells you there's nothing wrong?

if the wheel that is locking up has a drum brake, not a disc, have the return springs replaced.

if the springs are old they can become weak. have known this to happen on a ford escort.

obviously there would be no visual problem for a garage to repair.

cant see a stone chipping causing a wheel to lock. they usualy just make a grinding !!!!!

get the return springs looked at....its a cheap and easy repair...

alternatively, i would say its a siezed calliper if its a disc.

i had a problem with a brake pipe some years ago. the flexable brake pipe brokedown internally. this caused brake fluid to be locked in the pipe. this resulted in pressure being locked inside the brake !!!!!
