I did try this without a word matcher but (maybe I should be ashamed) I found it a little frustrating, and gave up.

I too gave up on last week's as the enjoyment factor wasn't there for me. I got through this one relatively quickly, but am not happy that I have got 6D right. I can only see one possibility for each of the affected across answers, but the word I have got certainly does not seem to correspond to the definition, nor does it have an 'r' in it, which I feel it should.

I've got three quarters of the grid filled, but haven't entered anything thematically yet, as far as I know. I can't get past the remaining clues in the SW quarter. This can't contain all the thematic entries, can it?

Excellent for: (a) newcomers (b) me, sitting in the sun in the garden with no electronic aids. Enjoyed it a lot! I wonder if, like climbing, we should have a system for grading crossword for the electonic aids reccommended? Some could then be solved "free" - mot even using the BRB.

Penitents. Having dismissed 4250 as more difficult than interesting, we have gone back to it as more interesting than this one. Almost finished.

Finally got there. Once I got the theme (a head-slapping moment), it all fell into place. I don't know why it took me so long to get it. Good fun.
