I make them choose to either pay before collecting or bring cash

ALWAYS insist on cash on collection. Too many have been cheated when they've been paid and had the item collected. Then the customer says they haven't had the item and paypal gives them a refund.

We just bought a large item, and paid using Paypal before we collected it. That was their choice and we had no problems with it.

I bought an item that was just a mile away from me. I asked could I pick it up if I paid cash. No problems. They didn't have to post and I didn't have to pay postage. Everyone was happy.

I've sold a few items on ebay for collection and used either method although most of the people I sold to preferred to pay me on collection.

As a seller it's not safe to accept paypal as method of payment for collected things as horseshoes says, the only proof of an item being given to the buyer Paypal will take is proof of posting even if it's a lorry, so they can reverse their payment on paypal if you don't have that ( which you obviously won't). Insist on cash.
