Have you ordered one for July or August? Has it been SORNd by the previous owner?

It was due to be sorn 1st of august but there is an option to tax it from the 1st of july and thats what I am choosing
You can get done for not displaying a current tax disc.
what does it say on the DSA website
Yeah I think you can be done for not displaying a current tax disc

and by all sorts of terrible little jobsworths too - not only the police
If it's for July and you've ordered it (sounds more like you're about to) then I'd have thought it was OK to drive as DVLA say it can take 5 working days to arrive - BUT not displaying the out of date one of course.
When you buy your tax on line on a normal renewal it states either on the form or online not sure which that you are allowed you display your out of date disc for 5 days.
I only bought mine on Sunday 30th June my disc arrived on the Thursday.
You wouldn't have been able to tax it at a Post Office even if you had tried!
I think it's centralised? So if it is queried, they can check and see it has been paid for, just not arrived. I honestly don't know if that's enough.
And mine have always arrived within the following two days online

Well I need it to drive to work tomorrow, so I am ordering it tonight so hopefully the insurance will show up as gone through (as I tried last night and it said it hadn't yet and I have to wait 24 for it to update so had to get bus this morning to work). So if I get pulled over I will just have to be polite and explain my situation. After all (other than not displaying a disc) I will be above board on everything!
The Finance Act 2013 was enacted 6 days ago and has amended S.33 of The Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 by increasing the grace period for non-display of a purchased tax disc (such as for change of keeper) from 5 to 14 days.

Why?

I have bought car tax at a Post office only last year.

Not sure the Post Office allows you to tax a car when it has been untaxed for 12 months?

If the tax disc is ordered then go for it. It will show on the police database that you have applied for it.
The police are not too bothered about tax disc offences. Last year the chav next door was driving a car with a tax disc 3 months out of date. When the police were notified they said it was nothing to do with them and it had to be reported to DVLA. It was duly reported to the DVLA and it was a further 2 weeks before they came out and clamped the car
