can never understand why anyone would do that, leave dogs in the car, especially in summer.

I've been in a car myself waiting for Mr Boo to come out of somewhere, and even with the window wide open and parked under a tree it's been unbearable.
And they don't need any more than British Spring temperatures, if they have thick coats.
I agree, dogs should never be left in hot car.
OH was reading in the paper last week that a woman actually left a baby in a stifling car, unbelievable.
Wolfgang you can't say it enough times ....
Only trouble is that most of the people who should read and heed it don't.
It could be a good idea to have signs up in say supermarket car parks etc to remind people. I knew somebody who lost their Irish Setter by leaving it in the car, his wife couldn't forgive him and they eventually parted.

If I was responsible for doing something like that with my dogs, I think I would have problems living with it!
My thoughts exactly baldric
We used to take Max everywhere with us, but he was never left alone in the car, unless it was somewhere like the paper shop when I was a case of in and out. If it was say at Tesco Trish would shop and I'd take Max a quick walk or open up the windows and tail gate sit with him till she was done. I really hate to see dogs left in cars in this sort of weather people just don'tseem to realise how hot it gets even people who you'd think would know better, it was only a couple of years ago a police dog handler left his dogs in a van and they died
With the amount of public information that has gone out about the massive increase in temperature inside cars when it's sunny, it's hard to believe some people are still so thick to do it.
You can't teach a lot of people common sense

They need to put it on an advert when Jeremy Kyle is on!

Some people think its ok to leave them with the windows open a few inches. ITS NOT! The inside of a car can get like an oven in a matter of minutes. As a dog has a higher temperature than a human to start with they overheat far quicker than we would. I would also remind people not to leave dogs tied up outside shops or supermarkets, as so many are going missing.
They also should not be taken on long walks in these temperatures, early morning or late evenings please, and not to far, or leave them at home with a nice bowl of water, also if they have a heavy coat get them clipped, it will grow again by winter.
Clipping is not the answer unless its a breed that does not shed. Most breeds have a double coat and the action of the top and undercoat works to keep the dog cool in summer and warm in winter like a vacuum. Nothing worse than seeing a dog that should have a double coat shaved to within an inch of its life! I even saw a Cavalier that had been shaved the other day - if you can't look after a coat as easy as a Cavalier's you should not have a dog. A good brushing will remove any lose undercoat and let the air through. Even my GSD with his thick top coat and furry undercoat is cool underneath.
and yet people still do it. Aquick trip to the shop can turn into hours if you meet someone you know which could mean a dead dog when you get back... but it won't happen to you you tell yourself. THINK!!

Shame on anyone who leaves their dog in a car in this weather. :(
Just been sent this which explains why you should not shave your double coated dogs: http://www.examiner.com/article/why-you-shouldn-t-shave-your-double-coated-dog
