What do they mean? They are usually triangles, squares or circles.

i think they are guides.

i know they can be used for directing traffic round towns and the like.

i guess you pick up on the sign that is on your route and follow that.

not 100% sure, but pretty sure im on the right track.

( i followed the signs) ha ha....
