Thanks to both of you. I am aware of "carpet" meaning "tell off" but I've never come across "rate" as a synonym for "tell off" or the floor covering.
I'll put RATE in - I presume both of you have.

So is "rate" an abbreviated version of "berate"? I've heard of "berate", of course but never come across the shorter version.
