Many properties now have water meters and the usage determines the bill. Those that are not use the old Rateable Value concept that used to be the method by which local authorities got their revenue before Council Tax, and before that Poll Tax. There are two elements to the bill - one for water supply and one for wastewater (some properties take the water supply but use their own drainage system). For two people (no family) you would probably gain a bit if your property happens to have a metered supply. 250 might be a reasonable annual budget. You pay it in two installments - April and October.

mine (thames water ) has the ability to pay monthly dd

i think you can request a water meter then the bill would be entirely in your hands

If your new property is on a water meter, ask your new water supplier for a free HIPPO to fit in your toilet cistern. Basically hey are plastic bags which when filled with water, reduce the amount of water you use for each toilet flush. Our water board estimates that up to 30% of each household's water consumption is caused by flushing toilets, so you will definitely save money if you fit one & have a water meter. Also, showers use less water than a bath, although power showers consume more water than a bath. Enjoy your first new home!
I live in a 1-bed house (on my own). My water is metered and my monthly payment, by direct debit, is 27.

Water bills vary a lot in different parts of the country. If there is no meter and it is an existing property (not a new one) find out who the water company (and sewage company if different) is and ask them.
There's something drastically wrong with someone living alone paying 27 per month on a water meter! I chose to have a water meter and have 2 children and paid 14 per month (over 12 months). Providing your new property has it's own seperate supply there's no reason why you couldn't apply to the local water company for that region and arrange to have a water meter fitted. They are by far the best method when on a budget.
