Are you sure the third letter is `l` A `wait` is described in the Oxford Dictionary as `a member of a small band of wind instrumentalists maintained by a city or town` In plural the word is such a body.

Well spotted boaw - but when is a lower case L in fact an upper case i?

Chambers gives for wait: (in pl.) musicians employed by a town to play on ceremonial occasions (hist.)
