File number increase

I run a couple of anti-virus programmes on a daily basis.
Am using MS XP Home SP2.
In the completion report they normally state that approx 34,000 files have been checked.
Today that number has increased to 57,000.
I've cleared all temporary files, cleared my cache and run system cleanup then run the anti-virus progs again. The number of files has reduced marginally to approx 56,000.

What are the possible reasons for this sudden increase in the number of files inspected?

Check what the program is actually scanning.

Do you have two hard disks in your PC and this time it is checking both of them ?

Or perhaps you have a CD or DVD in the drive and it is checking that as well.
