We have a neighbour from Sicily and he keeps telling us to go there on holiday. As my husband likes history, we thought we would give it a try.
Has anyone been? Where do you recommend? Are the hotels as good
as Spain? We prefer hotels with buffet meals and entertainment.
Many thanks in advance.

We went to Marina di Ragusa in the south of the island last year and it was very nice. Stayed in the Hotel Miramare; four star, clean, modern, large rooms right opposite a fine beach. The south of the island is not so developed as the north and I am not sure if any hotels there offer entertainment. Buffet breakfast at the Miramare was at their adjoining small bar and not too elaborate - but the bar was just as clean and bright as the hotel. The hotel restaurant was only open in the evenings and was also very good. There are numerous other eating places within five minutes walk.

We had a hire car and were going to visit many of the Roman sites. But the lure of the sun, beaches and clear warm sea meant we only got as far as the town of Siracusa. This had both Greek and a Roman amphitheatres the Greek one is enormous, it is on a hill with great views over the surrounding area. The town itself is also very interesting, it is a port and the old part has fascinating narrow, twisty streets and a piazza with a very large church that was originally a Roman temple.

Thank you VHG and Playbill for replies. Will consider Sicily, quite a change from Spain.
