Washer Driers

Are they worth the extra money? If so, which make is the best for under £400?

Washer packed up today and we haven't room for separate washing machine and tumble drier. Have been making do with drying clothes on line or radiator.

Problem is the drum is small so it's quite bad for drying. If something goes wrong with either the washer or dryer you risk being without both.

Have you got space elsewhere in the house for a dryer?

I have my drier in my spare room - great. wouldn't have those washer/driers about me.

Is it soace full stop or space near a window or a door for the hose? Had you thought about a condenser dryer?

I've only ever had washer driers, they are great for me but I only use the drier for finishing off when I can't wait. The smaller wash load capacity would be limiting for a big family too. I can recommend Ariston but that's my personal experience.

they are nearly condensers now woofie so don't need a hose. wouldn't be without mine and somebody said massive drum.

trouble is with a washer/dryer you ave to wait for the dryer to finish( if you cant dry it anywhere else) before you can put another load of washing in

I don't believe a combo can be as good as two items each designed for a single function. And when one goes wrong the lot needs sorting. I think if you have the space go for separates, if you are tight for space, then the combo may be a solution.

You CAN get decent washer-driers-- but good ones are expensive. As OG says, they are a compromise and are not as good as separate units.

Washer driers are fine for a couple especially if you only need the drier functon occasionally. If you are a family with limited outside drying space then go for separates.

I've never had large kitchen nor anywhere else where I could use a dryer so I have always used washer/dryers, my first was a nightmare but I eventually got a Bosch washer dryer which finally died after 11 years of use, I'm now on my second Bosch and it's going well. Unless I had a house with a separate utility room I'd always go for a washer dryer.

I'm not sure what you mean by compromise gingebee but mine certainly gets clothes as clean and as dry as I'd want.

Used washer driers for 20 years plus now, and always happy with them. They are awfully heavy to move though. Current one is Hotpoint.

prudie: it's Which? that said a washer-dryer is a compromise. Even a good expensive one (Bosch or Miele) can't be as good as two separate units.
