The groups you mention; homosexuals, blacks etc; are attacked simply because they belong to that group.

I get that many sexual attacks are about power and control, however, from the reports of sex attackers around here and the circumstances they young girls after a night out who have had a bit to drink are a definite target, probably seen as an early target. Often down side streets in town or around the main student area by me but there are others. Quite a few where women are walking through parks in the early hours going/coming back from work.
There have been a few recently round here where females have been targeted generally at all times of the day. I narrowly missed one as if I hadn't popped into the office on a whim to get something then I've have been where he attacked at the time.
There have been ones in cars too, people offering lifts (one where a girl was offered a lift to the hospital after an incident recently!) including taxis. I have felt uncomfortable on a few taxi rides and on one occasion was called by a frantic friend as a concierge ordered taxi "turned up" after I'd already left in a taxi which appeared to have been the one called.
I can see the rationale but worry it may increase drunken "inappropriate" behaviour for intoxicated females trying to get a cheap taxi ride home "taxi, flash yer tits girls" and that kind of thing. I can definitely see it happen in some busy city centre but tanked up females.
I also worry it may lead to an increase in fake taxis or predators if women may dress more scantily clad (or make themselves appear it, hitch up the skirt, lower their tops) for a taxi.
I feel safer in Manchester as you cannot hail a taxi unless it is a black cab, other taxis have to be booked through an operator. I'm not sure if it's changed now but in Leeds it was a bit of a freeforall.
