Border Terrier Demise Distresses Old Lady In Northampton.

An old lady around the corner's old Border Terrier has just had to be put to sleep due to cancer and other nastiness. She's well upset. She paid over two-hundred quid for another the other day. She was told it was a 'breeder' and it had been checked by a vet and given a clean bill of health. She was duped: it was at least three-years older than she was told; it had a heart murmur; its eyes were diseased; it was, at at least eight-years-of-age, full of milk, which, apparently, peeved the RSPCA vet no end; it had been bred into the ground and, very probably indeed, bullied and abused, as it cowered and tried to hide under any and everything for no reason other than to make itself invisible for an easier life.

The poor old dear spent loads of money grooming it and applying anti-flea/worm treatments etc before having to take it back to the belligerent owner after the vet's unhealthy diagnosis.

In a nut: if anyone knows of a Border Terrier/Border Terrier-type-dog for sale in the Northampton/NN4 area...

She, the bereaved, poured her heart out to me yesterday re., going home to an empty house etc. How giving the unsound border terrier back to the harpy broke her heart etc. Fair broke my heart listening to her. Especially as I was, as ever, accompanied by my Patterdale Terrorist, Varken.

How could she, and why don't the RSPCA take it away from the vile owner ???? This sounds very strange to me, especially as the RSPCA were 'peeved'. Poor bloody thing.

How sad - how awful, and if the dog was full of milk, presumably there were small puppies somewhere? It's a shame the lady didn't get the dog checked out before she paid up.....

But take it back to its life of misery? - why (presumably for a refund if that's the only way) but that is truly appalling. Poor beast - I have no faith in the RSPCA, but I suggest that this is a story for your local paper, it needs big publicity. Evil breeder needs to be shown up. It's not just this sad dog, there are probably others in the pipeline from this nasty puppy farm.

seadevil, we are in no way suggesting that the old lady - who sounds kind and loving to her pets - is evil. It's the breeder that me and the other respondents are saying is evil.

In fairness, the decision to return it may have been an error of judgement. I don't know a lot about these things but I thought it may have been reported to some authority or other and passed over to them. But that's water under the bridge now.

The issue you have asked for I, unfortunately can not help with. I do not live in the area. I think if it is a particular breed you are after then the obvious suggestion I have is to look up other breeders in the local area, Yellow Pages or Thomson's maybe. Or better yet is there a dog club website that can recommend a trusted one ?

I am just surprised that if she loves dogs as much as you say, she didn't kiss goodbye to the cost of the dog and try and get it into rescue somewhere if she couldn't keep it herself. She didn't HAVE to go through the "heartbreak" of handing it back. Evil? no, but thoughtless???????

I am not in any way critises that lady but,why didn't the RSPCA vet report the condition and rescue it?!

The vet can offer to take the dog into their care, but won't pay for it and can't do it against the owner's wishes unless the owner themselves has been cruel, in that case they can confiscate the animal and bring a private prosecution....of course I don't know whether the vet knew that the lady planned to take it back to the breeder, offered to take it into care or what happened, but no, the vet couldn't just take it off the lady.

You describe in detail the state and the plight of this poor dog who then GOES BACK to its cruel owner and you expect me to say nothing ??!! My sympathy and compassion is all for this dog who seemingly has gone back to a life of hell and if you don't like that, then tough !!!!!

I must say I'm a bit bemused like everyone else as to why you would of given the dog back to such a poor owner? However that wasn't the question asked and your elderly friend should go to her local vets who should be able and happy to provide details of RESPONSIBLE, CARING, TRUSTED breeders. A good breeder will be happy for you too look around their home and see how the dogs are being raised. If you don't like the conditions, you don't buy a dog, simple.
