First, thank you to all those who gave advice on lizards when my son was obsessed with them. We took your advice and went to shop to speak to people there. While my OH and i were deciding lizards were a bit too "specialist" for us, my son fell in love with a hamster.
We have picked her up today. He's called her Tiffany (no idea where that came from).

I saw that in the book, viv. How strange, it wouldn't have occurred to me that they hibernate. So, thanks, I'll watch out for that! I also didn't realise they ate chicken (too long keeping guinea pigs, i think!)
I would pick her up when she stops being 'startled' by your touch, I would also start stroking her straight away, and yes, be sure to keep her cage in a warm room or she will hibernate
That's great. So we'll go slowly for a couple of weeks, get her used to voices and gentle stroking and gently pick her up when she seems calm.
I was surprised about the chicken. Had assumed they were vegetarian!
