I now have everything working except the video recorder won't record - it'll play back and the set top etc is fine. Any ideas?

Are they all linked by SCART leads? This is the best way to interconnect, but you will have to record from the "AV" (or "AU") channel on the VCR in order to record from the set-top digital box. I have had a set up like this which includes a DVD player as well, and for some operations, it's neccesary to switch off the inactive device.
If it is connected properly and it plays back ok it probably needs tuning to the tv or set top box, on mine this means just keying in on your video controler 001 or 002, it should tell you whitch in your video manual.
Hi lloyd1e, first point is don't start a new question but continue with the old one, then people will follow the whole sequence of your problem -
If the set top is now connected to the vcr via the bnc plugs marked video and sound this is the line input and NOT a channel, the vcr must be set to use the line input and not a channel, most vcr remotes have a button marked I.Select or Input select or something like that which cycles between ''line in'' and ''channel in'' with each press and the display will show a channel number ot LI.
