Seventeen years after we sold and moved out of our last house, the council have decided to send us a Council Tax bill for September 2013 - April 2014 for it!!!! OH telephoned them and the woman he spoke to said "oh just ignore it". Why on earth would that happen?

I wouldn't be happy with 'ignore it', I'd want written confirmation that they've changed their records.
Sounds like they have had a bit of a glitch with their system, but very odd, also it's a few months late as the bills go out before april.

Dot - yes I thought it as a strange time of year too! I think we will contact them again and do as Rocky suggests and get written confirmation. The gentleman who bought the house off us in 1997 is now in a home and I bet it's something to do with that. I'll get it sorted. Thanks both.
how did they know where to find you after 17 years ?

Who knows Dee! We'll get back on to it.
The electoral register probably.
It will be an amended bill then up to when he went into the home. They've been fiddling around with the screen and sorting out the rebate on the years tax and probably clicked something they shouldn't.

I think that's it Dot.
Typical local council mess up.
If they were any good they would earn more by working in the private sector.
So the dross end up working for your local council.
Simples !
