It's good to see you back on here. Thanks for letting me know that someone was trying to get hold of me. I have now responded.
I enjoyed reading your stories of Manchester. One of the young factors has done a bit of urban exploring and from his Manchester trips has some good photos from inside Mayfield station if you know it.
By the way, what were the secret entrances into Maine Road?

i was on the last train into mayfield also in the early seventies i use to go in the pub near the station called the star and garter they had a rock disco in the upstairs room. the landlords daughter use to go to the same school as some of my friends

mayfield station was in the news recently think they have had to take the roof down

there were 3 ways to get in without passing a turnstile , if the ground was still standing

first one you would find , the main entrance

2nd , when looking at the main stand , go to the left of the players entrance towards the north stand/ old scoreboard end and from memory it was about the 5th ish entrance , staff use to use it , you would often see the groundsman there on match days

3rd, that is my secret even stan may have trouble thinking about where it is -)

2nd,
i always wanted to see round the old air raid tunnels

You may have seen this before. There are supposed to be quite a few tunnels under Deansgate etc and there were always rumours of a big secret underground telecomms chamber under Piccadilly Gardens

sorry should have said tunnel not chamber as they did not know about the chamber ?

Mayfield station: that is the one on Travis Street

The young FF should behold the ramp behind the Star and Garter which is er still there and still serving I think - the ramp is.... a horse ramp and should be at 18' anyway the inclination most efficient for gee-gees to pull loads.

Standing in front of Star and Garter and there are railway arches
actually they are the stables for said horses. Upto around five years ago the upper bits (now blue painted board) were blue painted bars to let the air in

Star and Grter gave the Greateful Dead their first break - I thought Dr F was going to say he heard them. They return and play intermittently

er that is it
pp did you know jackie

The Angel?
up past the marble arch on the right hand side was a pub called the osborne which in the early seventies was a big irish pub. always put black velvet band on when i went in there

later it became a bikers/ rock type pub with the best juke box i have ever seen
we used to hold our bike meets in there once a month

the barmaid from there ended up at a club in the town centre many years later
in the early seveties the marble arch was called the wellington inn or vaults i use to work next to it
going up to st oswald street you had

victoria hotel
church inn
spread eagle
kings arms
napoleon inn
crescent inn
the wellington was the pub i had my first pint in , the landlord john had three daughters
