What should be done first, the colour or the whites (ie skirting boards, dado rails)?

Ceiling, walls, woodwork.
If you are papering the walls then the correct order is ceiling,woodwork then walls.
If you do the woodwork first, you're likely to get splats on the gloss from the roller spray.
Zacs-master. Agreed but if you read my answer correctly,you will see that I qualified it by stating that if he was PAPERING the walls,then the correct order is - Ceiling Woodwork then Walls.
Even if I'm just painting I do the woodwork before the walls. If you make any mistakes while cutting in it's easier to wipe emulsion off gloss than the other way round.
Agree with Ratty. Wiping emulsion off gloss is easy. Wiping gloss off emulsion is impossible. Wood before walls.
Got to agree with the first 2 answers. The woodwork should always be done last except if you will be putting up a finish wallpaper. If a wallpaper is being put on that will be painted then do it the same way as ummmm says after the wallpaper has been hung.
Whatever you do, the second colour gets on the first so you have to touch up the first, which then gets on the second so you have to touch up the second, which then ....................
