Why do we 'throw' a sicky?

I don't really get your question.People throw sicky so they dont have to go to work at short notice or don't have any holidays to take

The question is, what's throwing got do do with taking a day off work? An alternative version is 'take' a sicky, which makes perfect sense. What I don't get is why it's thrown.

There doesn't seem to be any logical reason for this. A wild guess: something to do with throwing up??
