My mother still has trouble shortening it even now - althugh she calls my sisters Sue and Gill with no problem at all - figure that out!

My youngest daughter was christened Charlotte, but has always been Charlee.
Her son was christened Harry - as is quite common now rather than shortened from Harold.
I am happy to call people whatever they prefer.

I agree that shortened names sound more friendly, but don't like anything with a 'z' in it. My name is quite short, so i gave my children longer names to give them more choice. They can use full name if they become a doctor, shorter for a footballer.
I have a friend who called her children Carl and Lee, so they couldn't be shortened and then referred to them always as Carly and Lee-Lee.

Two of my children are called Tom and Dan although on their birth certificates they are Thomas and Daniel. My other children have short first names but a 'grown up' middle name. Our thinking was that if they felt their first names weren't 'grown up' enough as they got older they could use the full version of their name or their more grown up sounding middle names.
