We often get the 'wrong rubbish' put in our bins by passers by on bin days, this would mean we would not get our bin emptied for weeks on end !

And are the bni men going to empty the bins out on to the pavement first to check?

I am not against recycling, I did it way before it became the right-on thing to do and I always repair rather then buy a new one, but this is nuts.

Obviously not shortage of money in this council.

Our binmen won't take the bottle bin if it has anything other than glass or plastic bottles - they do a quick roadside check. They also won't take the cardboard bin if there is plastic in that. I can't see what the problem is - its easy enough to separate the rubbish. No doubt the people moaning about it are the same people who can't manage with two weekly bin collections either - our ordinary (black) bin is rarely more than a third full, even after two weeks
Sqad, indeed. And we take it practically every day as we're passing the collection point, so there's never a build-up of rubbish in the house.

Lynda, our collections are two weekly - one week domestic waste, the next recycling - and our bins are rarely full either.
Addressing the sorting thing specifically, we have many sites where there are bottle banks for green, brown and clear glass. All very sensible until the lorry comes along and empties each in turn into the same undivided skip mounted on his truck.
Private companies do the same with cans and bottles from pubs etc. There's always a team of sorters in the process, kerbside sorting can be just for show,
naomi......well it is a success in Spain, but I suppose if it was considered a "good idea" in the UK, it would mean job losses for refuse collectors......and we can't have that.

At least the refuse is collected on a daily basis.
They don't have collections in Ireland either but what about the elderly, or people that can't drive etc etc...

Well we are repeatably told that the UK, unlike many other countries, is packed with goodwill and philanthropy so surely someone with a car could take their rubbish............
Sorry sqad, I'm not following you. They're emptied when full and our domestic refuse collection is fortnightly.
If only life was that simple.
douglas......LOL...I have reread yours and seems i have misinterpreted it.
I thought that you were making the point that the separated recycled refuse, was dumped into the same lorry....... so what was the point in separating it?

My fault.
I live on the boundary of two district councils who have completely difference recycling regimes and bin colours. My neighbours don't seem to have any difficulty distinguishing between glass bottles, green garden waste and general kitchen waste, metal cans, plastic, paper and cardboard. I'm sure the sort of people who can't get this right and probably better off just lobbing everything into the street.
No worries Sqad. I'll be checking out the effectiveness of Spanish operatives later this week while spending a few days in Gata de Gorgos. :)
We have 3 bins, all colected fortnightly. Im really into recycling and when possible take all glass or plastic bottles to the supermarket ones on my way to work so it doesnt fill up my bins too soon.
I think they should get on more to large institutions etc like our hospital for instance. I get really annoyed that we get though at least 100 plastic milk bottles and possible 20 large food cans every day which just end up in our large bins at the rear of the hospital. Cardboard is kept seperate. Why are they and larger places who use more allowed to get away with NOT recycling properly. Surely they are some of the worst offenders.

You are probably thinking now, why doesnt she do something about it. If I could take them all to the correct recycling bins at the local supermarket I would, but now youve brought it up, Im going to suggest something being done. !!
and a tory run council , and all
// Our binmen often turn up about 7.30am. That annoys me.//

I'm wondering why they are so late our guys collect at 06.30.

WR.
We asked ourselves the "separating" question when we were on holiday in Tenerife recently. The resort prided itself on all its recycling bins outside the apartments, we all sorted diligently - only to find that three time a day, the cleaner tipped the contents of all three bins, and the wastebins which included cigarette butts, all in the same black container. Doh!
The whole system is utter crap if those running it go by the letter of what they have awarded themselves as ok to do. It's pretty crap even if they make sensible judgement calls. One more thing to despair about re authorities. Sometimes it seems everything changes for the worst by those who wish to interfere and make life difficult, especially for those who fund them.

The council are trying to SAVE money!!!

If a single bin-load of non-recyclable waste goes into a lorry which should only contain recyclable materials the whole load has to delivered to landfill. It costs around £1000 (mainly in landfill tax) every time a lorry delivers a load to landfill.

As a Council Tax payer, are you happy for your council to pay out vast amounts of your money just because a few lazy people can't be bothered to sort their refuse? Or perhaps you'd prefer them to do exactly what they are doing anyway, and seek to address the problem in the first place?
