Problem With Windows Product Key Stored In BIOS.

Greetings each.
I just changed the HDD in an HP-Compaq and now need to re-install an operating system.
The computer previously had WINXP-Pro installed, with a corresponding product key loaded into BIOS.
I don't have a disk for "Pro" and normally install "Home" version, but the stored key is invalid for that version.
I assume that should I wish to upgrade to a newer O/S, that would not be possible either?
Any ideas please?

It's been a long time since I rooted round a Compaq BIOS, but is it not possible to edit this setting just like any of the others?

Hi Mark.
That would be a very good suggestion if I could get into it!
F10 gets me into setup utility but merely displays settings with no option to change anything except date and time.
I don't have any info on how to access BIOS settings. :-(

If the key is invalid doesn't it normally give you an option to change the key when you try and activate windows, then you just type the correct key in.

Sadly that is not the case. :-(
On product activation Windows generates a 54 digit numerical code in 9 blocks of 6 digits.
These are then conveyed to the Microsoft automated system (I do it by telephone) which then generates another 54 digit code which is then typed into the computer to activate the O/S copy.
There is no facility there to enter/change any product key.

There is on every version of Windows I've seen since XP onwards.

Sounds like you have an OEM copy - your only option is to go back to HP and ask for help...

I always thought that the Product Key was stored somewhere in the Registry?

I thank you all for your contribitions.
After considering your replies, and speaking with local computer techs, I conclude that I shall need to hold out for an XP-Pro installation.
I recently posted a WANT on my local FreeCycle and a nice man just 5 miles away is sorting something out for me.
If that doesn't work then there is a very useful tool in my shed: It's called a "lump hammer"!

Whilst I thank you for your somewhat untimely response, I would point out that this thread is now well over a year old.
I eventually resolved the issue as indicated by my final posting - 19:53 Sun 22nd Jul 2012.
