is it better to run on economy mode or normal mode ? it cuts out itself when sitting at traffic lights which i think is great but friend told me that this costs more as car needs to restart again when lights turn green. what do you think ?

I doubt that using or not using the eco mode will be any different it might even be worse on MPG!

Every time you start your engine it takes a lot of energy out of the cars battery to start the car again , for about the next 20 of miles you will be using the fuel you hoped to save by recharging the battery.

If you do a lot of stops every day your battery could soon go flat even though the battery for a stop start car is a bit more powerfull than the ordinary ones

the whole point of 'start stop technology' is to save fuel, if it didnt all the manufacturers that use it would be guilty of false advertising.

I have start-stop on my new car and it is definitely more economical in that mode...but how much you save depends very much on how much time you spend sitting in traffic.
The comment above about the battery becoming flat is not relevant...not only does the battery hold more power (ie bigger capacity), there are lots of safeguards that mean, for example, the start-stop doesn't operate in some circumstances...when the battery is lower on power, say. This has been designed into the system.
I know two people that have had start-stop on their cars for years and have never had any problems with it.....just use it!

totaly agree with you gingejbee,
theres all sorts of rubbish comments about these systems, ie batterys,starters etc will wear quicker !! VW have been using it for years with no problems. High end vehicles like Mercedes & BMW use it and they wouldnt get involved if they thought there would be issues.
All i can say is its a bit confusing when you drive one and are not aware that the start stop is active or the vehicle is even fitted with it.

Although it generally works I've always been weary of the start/stop feature, I fear it just won't start again and for saving a teaspoon of fuel it just isn't worth it.

I leave my Stop/start switched off, but I don't do a lot of stop/start type of driving so no probs!

My stop-start is linked to "regenerative braking"...so all spare energy from braking and natural deceleration goes back to the battery....every little helps!

i dont know , though i reckon if it did not save fuel then why on earth would any major car companies use it ???????????????????
