doctordb don't buy any pearls before swine cd's you will never sleep -)
He works from photographs, which is somewhat frowned upon by the art fraternity. To compare him to music, he's Barry Manilow, whereas people like Van Gogh, Dali, Pissaro etc etc etc, are Beethoven or Tchaikovsky. I find his work sickly sweet and a bit one dimensional.
There's no doubt he appeals more to women.
prudie could be, i love much of his work, he has a corker of a picture, which i can't seem to find to post, of a woman in a black cloche hat, with a pearl earring, that for the moment is my favourite. so if anyone can find it please post, it hangs on one wall alongside some other favourites.
as to Tate Modern, i have visited a number of times, some of what was on display was just awful, not what i would could art, but then our perceptions are different.
As a teen I was a fan of Jackie Stewart so I would give Vettriano's "Tension Timing Triumph" a spot on my walls
Is this the one you mean Prudie -http://www.jackvettriano.com/exhibitions/days-of-wine-and-roses-london-october-2010/portrait-in-black-and-pearl-2/
He was on the radio earlier this week, asked much of the same question - he's quite commercial which the snobs don't like.
that is it, love this and would buy it full size to hang in pride of place, to me its every bit as enigmatic as Vermeer's painting
as is Lowry, warhol, Pollock, and many a room has a print of the Mona Lisa,
that's what i said earlier, many are snobs, very few i would have time for, exception being Roy Strong, and sometime though can't handle the accent, Brian Sewell.
Artists are snobs because they are judging their profession. I could knock out a few Jack Vettriano. It's amateur stuff.
The 'amateur' earns about £500,000 per annum on royalties from the sales of a print of one of his paintings.
I remember a uni seminar where we discussed the notion of what was considered 'valuable artwork'. We were shown some slides of various works of art and asked to evaluate them. One slide showed a Terry Frost painting. Lots of comments about how valuable it was. Except that it turned out to be a copy made by the seminar leader's art student wife. Discussion killed!
well at last he has been recognised as the great artist he is, his retrospective starts soon until February in kelvingrove art gallery, Glasgow id say there are many '' singing butlers'' hanging around houses. :)
.

because his technique is cr+p

I like the one of them dining on the sand - but the tables should have sunk in the sand unless the beach were concrete based.

The brush strokes - sorry "brush strokes" are so bad that it looks like paint by numbers

and if it aint Vettriano it aint worth much
a few early canvasses came up on the Antiques Road show
when he was well like one of us (ie couldnt paint)
He's popular and successful, something the art establishment doesn't approve of. They will accept one or the other but not both.
He's popular because he's accessible and safe. His style is more like illustration...and I guess a bit 'romantic' to women. At least what I've seen of it.
If I had to choose between him and Lucian Freud-I'd take the Freud any time. I love his work-earthy and voluptuous, and not pretty.
