You need to associate the relevant files type(s) to the program(s) you want to open them with. It's not a difficult task but we can't provide you with exact instructions unless we know what the attachments are. Are they, for example, images in the jpeg format or perhaps something like Excel spreadsheets?

If you're not sure what the attachments are, please tell us the file extension(s). e.g. if an attachment is shown as 'mydog.jpg', it's the 'jpg' bit that we need to know about.
Start Outlook and go to Tools/Options/Mail Format and remove the 'tick' in "Use Microsoft Office Word 2003 to read Rich Text e-mail messages".

Slackalice tried that still doesn't open
OK, I got the wrong end of the stick!

You need a pdf reader to open the files. You can use this

http://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/

or even better imo

http://www.foxitsoftware.com/Secure_PDF_Reader/
Save one of the attachments to somewhere on your hard drive. Go to its location and right-click on it. Select 'Open With > Choose Program'. Click on the program that you use to read PDF files. (It's probably Adobe Reader, unless you've installed an alternative, such as Foxit or SumatraPDF). Put a tick in the box where it says 'Always use this program . . .'. Then the PDF should open correctly, as should all PDF attachments in your emails.

Select says select the encoding that makes your document readable?
It could simply be that someone has sent you some corrupt files.

However I'd try installing SumatraPDF, which can often open files which Adobe Reader doesn't like:

(If you're asked whether SumatraPDF should be your default pdf viewer, allow it).

There is lots of invoices to open from different suppliers I think using different accountant software
If you've got ONE of the attachments to open with Adobe Reader AND you followed my instructions to select 'Always open this type of file . . .', above, all other PDF attachments should now open automatically in Adbobe Reader.
