When this tragedy occurred Captain Schettino explained that he had accidentally slipped into a waiting lifeboat whilst supervising the abandonment of his ship. What was not entirely clear, however, was how he also managed to fall into a waiting taxi on his arrival on the quayside, and how he accidentally checked into the town's best hotel shortly...

didn't realise so many had died.. 32 ..
Building 1000 was built in 2004 but initially failed to get tenants to occupy it. They were probably put off by the noise and pollution from the City Airport. After laying more or less empty for three years the Council decided it would be ideal for its new headquarters. Remember, this was before the financial crash and the ensuing recession. In theory it could have worked. The sale of over 50 sites would contribute to the asking price of £75million. (+£20million for retrofitting and moving). As a side note, 600 council jobs were lost because of the relocation.

They deal was signed in 2008 but unfortunately the Financial Crisis struck at the same time and property sales plummeted just at the time the Council were trying to sell its old buildings. That was just unfortunate timing.

If the council can make money by leasing its office space on their new asset, that seem to be a good option.

With hindsight they should not have bought the building, but they did and now have to make the best of a bad situation.

I'd say his defence team have got a nigh on impossible job.

What a disgrace this coward is.
Yes he should, but he is an irresponsible coward so he will wriggle as much as possible.
Just do a Cameron, and Osborne, and blame the previous Captain.
Anyone who takes on the job of being in charge of something as large as a liner, can't - when something goes wrong - pick and choose which bits he wants to be in charge of.
It was said at the time that the Captain had ordered the ship to sail past the town near the rocks with all lights on as 'show' for some friends of his who he wanted to impress , the helmsman at first refused to do it but was given a direct order to do it by the captain.

it's enough that 32 people died from this tragedy, the Captain was on board he is responsible for this, as to jumping ship, what a bloody coward.
