A few times.
Once, when I had an old Mini with a faulty guage - it spluttered to a halt and freewheeled. I was lucky, the next left turn was down-hill for a quarter-of-a-mile with a petrol station at the bottom, so I rolled right to the pump!
Second time, I was lost, miles from anywhere on a country road at about two in the morning. I knocked on the first cottage with lights on, and they very kindly gave me their can full of petrol and asked that I returned it next time I passed that way. Sadly, with my famous sense of direction, I could never find their cottage, so was never able to return the can, and I still feel bad about that now!
Last time, I was rushing to collect my grand-daughter having driven from Shrewsbury, to Stoke, so was in unfamiliar territory (again!) I knew I was on vapour, and planned to pick up fuel when I had done my collection (I was running late). I ran out of fuel, but happily, this time, I walked about a hundred yards to the brow of the hill, and another hundred yards from there was a petrol station! I bought a can and filled it, and then filled up there before going on - and yes, I do carry a full can with me now!
Sorry Eccles!!!

I was forever running out of petrol when i was young. I lived in London and earned next to nothing. When the dial went on the red i'd put a fivers worth in but i always convinced myself that if i held my breath it would get me a few extra miles. The best time was running out in the middle of Waterloo bridge. Not easy to find a petrol station from there, it was a long walk. I had a very well used petrol can in those days.
Now I keep a full tank and don't like to go below 1/4 if i can help it.

Twice. Once on a country road about 2 miles from home. It was absolutely peeing down and I had to call a recovery truck because it knocked all the electrics out.
Then again about 2 months ago. I was about to pull in to the petrol station at tesco but decided it made sense to do my shopping first. When I pulled out of the parking space the car went caput and a trolley boy and couple of customers had to help me push it out the way so I wasn't blocking the rest of the car park. Yes I felt like a massive idiot.

First time I ever drove a car by myself....passed my test, bought a second hand car from a local garage, picked it up and off i went, didnt even look at the petrol gauge I was so nervous and busy concentrating, thought i would go out of town towards the country side where the roads were quieter and about 5miles down the road the car started spluttering and jumping and then it died! this was before mobile phone so i was stranded :(
