I am with Mrs O and Boo, how hot is it in hellfire should I wear my asbestos knickers ? Seriously it is a tragedy but it happens time & time again there are always people desperate enough to try against all odds.

B00, I presume the skipper knew what the compass was for. I imagine someone else threw it away - just as I imagine someone else lit the fire. No seaman would ever do that!

I found it quite upsetting along with all the other horrible things in the news. I get upset very easily. I need to stop watching the news.

assuming there's a luxury-end human traffic ticket that gets you a seaworthy vessel, adequate safety equipment, enough lifeboats, lifejackets and flares on the passage, then no, no seaman would ever do that
