Don't buy one now if you can help it. New models are coming out at the end of the month. You will get a better iPad for the money you will pay now.

If it is just for playing with in the house, get the cheapest wifi only model.
If he uses it on holiday, make sure you use a wifi connection. Downloading data on a mobile phone type coonection with roaming charges will be very very expensive.

If he has a lot of music on his MacBook (or PC computer) it might be a good idea to find out how many Gigabytes that is, and get an iPad that can accommodate it.
Be warned, they're addictive!

I have both an iPad mini and a larger iPad. Gromit is 100% right - if you can, hang on until the new models are announced, because at that point you can make a choice as to whether to buy one of the new ones, or one of the current ones (who's retail price will be discounted).

As to which model...it depends on how he will use it.

My mini is great for travelling around with. It works well on public transport. The larger iPad is ideally suited for use around the home.

Also, the larger iPad will have 'retina display', and the smaller one (currently) doesn't.
I liked my big ipad, but am ADDICTED to the mini. yes you can store music on it and it has an earbuds socket but doesn't come with them. If he likes music, go for the biggest memory that you can afford, I would also think seriously about getting the one that will allow a data plan as if you don't you can't add it later.

Hi Tez
Just bought a Google Nexus 7 2013 - absolutely brilliant. Reviews of this tablet are excellent and I was not disappointed. Very fast, brilliant screen and extremely responsive touch screen. Also much cheaper than the Apple products. I am not against Apple (I have a 4th Gen I Pod touch which is superb) but it was the cost that initially led me to the Google. Why not have a read of some reviews ? Hope this helps.

ok wolfgang cheers
I love my Nexus 7, too
Hello again Tez,

The new models are to be unveiled on Tuesday 22nd October, and judging by Apple's previous releases, you should be able to order one immediately.

Most cruise ships have wifi these days, but charge ridiculous prices so be careful. You can generally find a free wifi hotspot on your stops.

Have a good hols :-)
