I'm out of contract with 3 and the offer to upgrade is worse than if I were to walk into a shop and take out a new contract, I've worked out that it could save me nearly £190!
Does anyone know if I could get a PAC code, take out a new contract with 3 at a lower price and then port my old number to the new contract?
I'd be quite happy to get a new number but I do like it and have had it for ages so would like to keep it! Thanks!

Just take your phone into the shop - they should match the new contract price with an equivalent price for an upgrade on your existing number.

[ at least that's what Voda did with me ]
AS far as I'm aware, you can only port your number when going to a different network.
I don't know why they can't let you keep your number, but I'm fairly sure that's the case :(
Just reading dave's reply and your question, I need to ask, where have you been offered the new contract ??
If it's in a Three shop, then I would think that they would be able to offer you the upgrade for the same price. If it's been offered at another shop, such as Carphone Warehouse, etc ...... then I'm sure they won't be able to do such a thing .........
Phones4You did my Voda upgrade - they matched their price for a new phone & seemed to have enough direct access to the Voda billing systems to do it as an upgrade rather than a new contract.
I suppose the answer will depend on the shop and the network provider then.
I was on Three and had a similar problem a while ago. I could take a new contract out with Dialaphone, quite a bit cheaper than I could get the same phone directly through Three on an upgrade. I rang Three and told them - they wouldn't budge.
I wanted to keep my number so badly, that I ended up getting a different phone and switching network - I'm now with Vodafone.
I switched from an O2 monthly contract to O2 payg and kept my number. You may find that wonderful new contract offer is for new customers only and they won't give it to you but its worth getting on to them and putting the screws on.
PAC codes won't let you transfer on the same network, but if all else fails you could port to pay as you go on a different network and then back again.
but the network can do it, at least O2 can so i don't see why others shouldn't be able to.
