I've totally finished this enjoyable puzzle but, as usual, am unsure if I've made a mistake on the last little bit! I've found the 4 clues with the shared definition and my pairs of letters definitely make a good euphemistic translation of the perimeter phrase, except that my translation has 69 letters and the pairs of letters add up to 68 so I've had to add an extra O between my Across letter and my Down ones to make it make sense. Given the shape of this letter have I missed something subtle here or just gone wrong?

Thank you so much Boreas. I actually realised about an hour ago where I went wrong. I got a grip and grasped my mistake in other words! My translation is slightly different from yours as it is
4 3 4 5 4 9 2 4 4 5 6 3 5 4 6. I seem to have some 5 letter words where you have 4 letter ones, but as I now have a phrase of 68 letters I'll settle for that, I think!
