This is not another "foodbank" thread or indeed political. just a point that I need clearing up, which hasn't been satisfactorily answered.
I was brought up in the post WW2 years and things for the poor, working class, call them whatever you will...was tough.
There were minimal benefits for the poor and one had to grit one's teeth sometimes to eek out a living to feed and clothe one's children.
60 years on, there are far more benefits for the poor, foodbanks have arrived to feed the needy and we are. or I am led to believe that now we are better off than our grandparents (my era)
To me, over 60 years, the plight of the poor seems to be WORSE than in the 1950's.
Is it, are they and why should it be?
During that time we have seen Socialist and Conservative Governments and yet it would appear ( based on the emergence of foodbanks) that a 2 year Coalition government seems to be taking the blame.
In the past many people had a lot less, but expectations are different now. Additionally, we’ve lost a lot of the skills our parents and grandparents possessed – like budgeting within their means and cooking meals from scratch. Contrary to popular belief, foodbanks are not new. The Trussell Trust set up its first in the UK in 2000 - long before this government took office.
i have said it before and will say it again in the old days if you could not buy any coal you would burn scrap wood to keep warm these days people have to use gas or electric which they need money for and that is a big difference
many years back my dad got a couple of big wooden packing cases dropped off at our house and i gladly chopped up all the wood. some wood was given to an old lady down the street that my mother had spoken too and it helped keep her warm over the winter months.
