My parents had a downstars bathroom built next to the kitchen, don't ask why!) but as this is France, anything goes I guess.

I thought exactly the same - you'd never get away with that in the UK. Building regs ask for at least one door of separation between kitchen and bathroom, I thought you had to have a lobby but I could be wrong on that. The thought of having to leave the kitchen because someone needs to use the loo is pretty revolting.
