Follow these steps. It's very straight forward.

Definitely do it himself. Even if he pays Gladstone Brookes 25% of the claim to do the work he'll still have to spend almost as much time on it as he'll have to find the info to give to GB.
Using the money saving expert template in chrissa1's link will save him a lot of money- hundreds maybe thousands

It may be easy to do it yourself, pug, but it depends how much time your son has got..... we claimed PPI through a company (not the one you mentioned) and they did all the work for us, all we had to do was fill in a form for each claim, they did all the submitting and chasing up for us. We didn't have to do anything more. It worked too - apart from a couple which have gone to the Ombudsman as the companies are digging in their heels. As busy working people it was worth us paying the 20% to the claims company.
I know it suited you boxtops but I'm not sure what more there is to than the bit you did- fill in a form.
I haven't had PPI but I understand the companies are used to dealing with claims using the standard MSE template and I would definitely do it myself even if I had little time. I know when I claimed for endowment mortgage mis-selling I was working very long hours but the process was very straightforward and I feel it would have taken longer if I'd had to seek out a claims company first, hand over all my details and check they weren't overcharging me.

I understand what you say, factor - we started claiming PPI in the early days when the process wasn't so clear-cut, and not so many people were doing their own. Our view was we'd rather have the experts do it than risk doing something wrong - poor terminology for example, which they could wriggle out of - if we did it ourselves. We didn't have to seek very far - the company we used was offering discounts to our employees, so we just went for that - thankfully with great success!
