This article made me smile http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2474873/When-frankfurters-fondue-hostess-trolleys-fashion-Hilariously-naff-dinner-party-photos-reveal-way-used-dine.html

My Mother was oh so sophisticated making Spag Bol in the 70's......such a shame she bought a tin of Buitoni(?) bolognaiase sauce!

What recipes or gadgets remind you of yesteryear?

I remember chilli con carne being served up at every party I went to in the early 80s

I hope you had some bowls of grated cheese and chopped raw onion and capsicum to garnish your chille with HC?
Natch, and some people thought it was extra posh to put chocolate in it
Vichyssoise is leek and potato soup DT.
Come anywhere near me and you'll drown in it...
As if I didn't know that already......duh.

I hadn't realised I was extra posh HC......I just thought I was normal/hip/retro/confused........!
Birdseye fish fingers, Smash instant mashed potato, and tinned peas. Yum yum.
I remember when Kiwi fruit and broccoli spears were things to serve at dinner parties because they were so 'new.'

I still make a mean Coq au Vin.
My mum thought she was very sophisticated serving us Vesta Chow Mein. She made spag bol using packet tomato soup and on a Friday we had cod in parsley sauce, boil in the bag of course. My mum worked hard at her job but bless her was not a very good cook. I was taken out at 16 years old for a special meal and had avocado with prawns, I thought I'd 'arrived' lol! Didn't taste of much though lol!

I could pop two culinary cherries with that menu Sandy!
cheese and silverskin onions, bacon wrapped chipolatas, on cocktail sticks, stuck into a foil covered half grapefruit

celery stuffed with cottage cheese or - for the real wow factor - peanut butter

tinned salmon, mashed with a bit of vinegar and pepper, in brown bread sandwiches
Question Author
Hmmm, methinks cheese and silver skin onions is an uber sophisticated version of cheese and pineapple!

Celery filled with peanut butter.....and added wow of raisins is known as 'ants on a log'!

I might make chicken Kiev this weekend to keep the retro vibe going!
I think it was more about my mother being too tight to open a whole tin of pineapple "just for that" ;)
Question Author
Hmmm, I recognise that trait.....waste not, want not.......
